Guy Davies – Expedition Member
Guy is a born and bred Mancunian who was delivered on a bitterly cold and snowy April day in 1966. He strived hard in his formative years leaving grammar school with the impressive tally of 3 O’Levels and a strong desire to join the Army.
In October 1982, aged just 16, Guy joined the Royal Engineers as a Junior Leader. He spent his first year in Dover training to be a Combat Engineer where he was deprived of a normal teenager’s existence. He then joined the adult army and served in exotic locations such as Ripon and Tidworth. Additional service in Berlin, the Sinai, the Falkland Islands, Norway and Denmark meant Guy was able to add more unusual beer mats to his already impressive collection. Having failed to qualify as a draughtsman he succumbed to the lure of a warm office and hot coffee, and began a career of pay and administration.
In 1993 Guy transferred to the Adjutant General’s Corps which opened up far greater opportunities to travel. Subsequently he served in Nottingham, Colchester and passed the All Arms Commando Course. A protracted operational deployment to Northern Ireland gave him the opportunity to learn to climb (scarily he taught himself and his unwitting partner) in the Mourne Mountains and the impressive Fairhead sea cliffs. His operational service then continued with a 3 year tour in Sierra Leone where he learnt to carve through the warm waters with his kayak and surf board.
At a young age Guy was encouraged to accompany his parents hill walking and had climbed the majority of the notable peaks in UK by his early teens. Having been distracted by the fairer sex and beer for a number of years he eventually settled down and has since gained a number of Adventure Training qualifications in trekking, mountaineering and ice climbing. Recent service has taken Guy to Belgium, Winchester and Turkey during which time he planned and led a number of expeditions to countries with exceptionally warm climates – notably the USA, S Africa, Corsica and E Turkey. He has also joined a number of expeditions to the Alps and the Dolomites, and to Nepal where he summitted a peak just shy of 6,000 metres.
Guy is still serving having recently gained a commission. He is married to Marion who prefers not to join him on all of his adventres. He has two young daughters who, at the ages of one and two, show great climbing potential already.
Guy looks forward to once again climbing with old trusted acquaintances and is honoured to join an expedition with such a notable and worthwhile cause.
